My name is Kane ‘Big Daddy’ Johnson.  I am a born and bred Southlander but my whanau links back to the far north in a little town called Awanui.  My wife and I are expecting the birth of our first child!! I will be sure to update this when our little one arrives!  I have come to Nga Kete Matauranga Pounamu to work with whanau in a Community Worker role.

Prior to my arrival here, I worked at Awarua Social and Health Services.  I had roles in Truancy, the Tahuri Atu-About Face programme and then in Human Resources Management.  I have played Rugby, League and Touch for a few years and have enjoyed some success with my club - Star and with Maori rugby where I have played for both the Murihiku and Te Waipounamu (S.I) Maori teams.  I do some DJ work with the Southland Sharks and also occasionally privately or in town.

The Community Worker role is an exciting one for me as it allows me to get in and work with the Whanau.  I enjoy the many challenges, helping Whanau through changes and the building of meaningful relationships that you make with this type of mahi, as no two days are ever the same.

Helping whanau move towards ‘Whanau Ora” with their input and my tautoko –what else could be better than this?  I am looking forward to my Journey here at Nga Kete Matauranga Pounamu,

Mauri Ora !
